He did win the Champions League with the Reds thanks to an impressive comeback in 2005 that will forever remain in the history books, but Xabi Alonso still rues not having clinched the domestic title.
Liverpool came close in the 2008/09 term, but a string of negative results killed their momentum towards the end of the campaign. Alonso feels this was because the squad was not completely up to task for a long season.
"We lacked that one special player," he admitted. "We had an excellent squad but when it came to unlocking defences with flair, we just didn't have that player. In the Champions League though, we competed like our lives depended on it."
The experienced midfielder left Anfield for Real Madrid at the end of the season and continued to collect trophies for the 'Blancos' and subsequently Bayern Munich. Liverpool's long wait for a league title continues...
