In France they are still digesting the bad news which the French FA gave recently. Benzema has a left thigh injury which will make him miss the World Cup in Qatar. He has dropped out of Didier Deschamps' squad just two days before France's World Cup opener against Australia.
The French side can still call on another striker to occupy the vacant spot. They have until Monday to give FIFA a name if they want to.
'L'Equipe' has revealed the names of players who could be could be in the running. The favourite is Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder. He missed out on the squad initially to the surprise of many and he could be a great option for France. Another thing in his favour is that he is on holiday very close to Doha so he would be able to join up with the squad immediately if Deschamps calls him up.
Anthony Martial of Man Utd and Bayer Leverkusen's Moussa Diaby are also in the running. Both are reportedly in Paris and, of course, more than willing to fly out to Qatar if Deschamps needs them.
If Deschamps is not happy with any of these options, the coach could call up a midfielder. If he decides to do this, Thomas Lemar of Atletico Madrid and Martin Terrier, who is shining for Rennes, would be the most likely candidates.
France are still racking their brains trying to think what to do. Deschamps has six attackers in his squad: Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud, Coman, Dembele, Thumary Kolo Muani. Deschamps is not short of firepower up top, but he has the option to add another forward given the last minute absence of the indispensable Karim Benzema.
