Real Madrid came top of their group involving Inter, Sheriff and Shakhtar before beating PSG 3-2 on aggregate in the last 16. They then defeated Chelsea 5-4 and Man City 6-5 both after extra-time in the quarters and semis. For Liverpool, they took maximum points in their group which included Atletico, Porto and AC Milan. They then defeated Inter 2-1 on aggregate in the last 16 before beating Benfica 6-4 and Villarreal 5-2 in the quarters and semis respectively.
