UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Rodri and Morata for Gibraltar chants

UEFA announced on Tuesday that it was initiating "disciplinary proceedings" against Spanish national team players Alvaro Morata and Rodrigo Hernandez on a number of charges in relation to the chants "Gibraltar is Spanish" during the official celebration of the UEFA EURO 2024 title in front of their fans on 15 July in Madrid.

Both players, team captain in Morata's case and player of the tournament in Rodrigo's, have been charged with four "charges", according to UEFA: "breach of the general principles of conduct"; "violating of the basic rules of decent conduct"; "using sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature"; and "bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute". 

"The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course," UEFA announced in a statement.

In point 3 of the above-mentioned section of the Disciplinary Regulations, UEFA explains that "infringements of the above principles and rules shall be sanctioned by disciplinary measures", without specifying the scale of the determinations that may be made in that regard.
