It is often said that strikers are players who rely on bursts of form: they can score in numerous consecutive matches or go long periods without finding the back of the net. Here are the five best goalscoring runs in Europe's main leagues.

Ligue 1: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Vahid Halilhodzic

Both strikers scored in nine consecutive Ligue 1 games, with Zlatan completing the feat in 2015-16 with Paris Saint-Germain, while Halilhodzic did it in the 1984-85 season for Nantes.

Premier League: Jamie Vardy

Vardy played a major part in Leicester City's historic Premier League title win in 2015-16. He broke Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record by scoring 13 goals in 11 consecutive matches.

Serie A: Gabriel Batistuta

The Argentinian striker can boast the record of scoring in the most consecutive matches in Serie A history, as he found the back of the net in 11 consecutive games for Fiorentina at the start of the 1994-95 season.

Bundesliga: Gerd Muller

The legendary German goalscorer managed to score in 16 consecutive games for Bayern Munich during the 1969-70 season.

La Liga: Lionel Messi

The Barcelona star holds many records, and one of them is the longest goalscoring run in Spain, as he overtook Brazilian superstar Ronaldo. Messi scored in an incredible 21 consecutiv games during the 2012-13 season.
