Bruno Fernandes' foul on James Maddison was set to guarantee him suspension from Manchester United's next three fixtures in the Premier League. The captain was sent off at the at the 42nd minute in the match against Tottenham on Sunday following the foul. However, Man United have since appealed the FA's decision to suspend the Portuguese player.
On Tuesday the club announced that their appeal was successful with an official statement that reads: "Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal. The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 29 September. Fernandes was set to miss our league fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and West Ham but will now be available for selection following the successful appeal."
Fernandes was vocal on his belief that the foul should not have been awarded a red card. "I don’t take [the decision] as everyone wants to see it, not with my studs. I take him with my ankle,” he said as he spoke afte the match. “He [Maddison] said it’s a foul but never a red card, that’s what he said. You can see it’s never a red card - we have to look at many other incidents, I get kicked and never see the red card coming so quick.”
Man United's upcoming fixture in the Premier League see them going up against Aston Villa, and although the defeat against Spurs was a tough one to take for Erik ten Hag's men, the overruling of Bruno Fernandes' expulsion is something that the team can celebrate.
