Gavi has been announced as the winner of the Kopa Trophy for the first time in his career. The prize, named after Raymond Kopa, goes to the best under 21 player of the year. Pedri won the least edition while Mbappe and De Ligt have also won the trophy in the past.
The 18 year-old beat nine other contenders for the award after having a tremendous season for Barcelona. For the first time, the prize was awarded based on the season (2021-22) rather than a calendar year. The winner is decided after votes from football journalists as well as coaches and capitains of national teams.
Despite a disappointing season for Barca after losing Lionel Messi, Gavi was a bright spark for the Catalan giants and he was one of their best players. For his club, Gavi made 47 appearances in all competitions last term and scored two goals. The youngster also provided five assists and he continues to feature regularly for Xavi's side this season.
The midfielder's performances also earned him his Spain debut and he has made 12 appearances for Luis Enrique's side. He also netted his first international goal in a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic in a Nations League clash last June. He has a very bright future ahead of him.and this award is fully deserved.
