OFFICIAL: Athletic's De Marcos to retire at end of season

Every story has to have an end. And that of Oscar de Marcos and Athletic is close to happening. More specifically, it will be at the end of the current season, as confirmed by the player and the club.

"Athletic Club captain Oscar de Marcos has announced that he will hang up his boots at Athletic Club at the end of this season after 16 years with the men's first team. The skipper has chosen this decision so as to concentrate all his efforts on the side's objectives this campaign, with the Lions currently fourth in LaLiga and through to the round of 16 in the Europa League," Athletic said in a statement.

De Marcos will retire as the second most-capped player in Athletic Club's history, behind only Jose Angel Iribar. The captain has equalled the 560 games played by Iker Muniain, whom he will surpass as soon as he plays one more game.

A Copa del Rey and two Super Cup winners, De Marcos will retire at the age of 36. He made his debut with the first team squad in the Europa League qualifier against Young Boys and wants to close the circle by winning the title at home, as this season's final will be held at San Mamés.
