Newcastle played against Potter's side in a Premier League match at St. James' Park. Chelsea could go fifth in the Premier League with a victory but they were unable to. This was the last match for both teams before the World Cup.
The first half ended in a goalless draw despite the fact both teams tried very hard to score. Both teams had an equal share of possession and the same amount of chances to score although there were not many of them during these first 45 minutes.
However, in the second half, Newcastle's Willock opened the scoring for his side in the 67th minute. Almiron went towards to the goal and Willock scored from the D and Mendy could not stop that shot. Chelsea were forced to make substitutions in order to find an equaliser but they did not fulfil their target. Moreover, several players received yellow cards and the atmosphere was tense at the end of the match.
In addition, Koulibaly got injured at the worst moment for him with the World Cup just around the corner. Hopefully he will recover to play for Senegal in Qatar.
Chelsea tried to come back in the closing stages and, although it was a very even contest, Newcastle won against them at home.
Newcastle are 3rd on 30 points while Chelsea are 8th on 21 points. We will see how both teams progress after the World Cup break.
