Hungary's Gazdag makes MLS history after Euros exit

MLS continues to run its course with Leo Messi's Inter Miami not noticing the Argentinian's absence and remaining the leading club in the competition despite the parallel Copa America. The North Americans did not make an exception for the European Championship either and have continued with their schedule, so that some of the players who had to play in Europe had to return to their clubs when they were eliminated.

This was the case with Daniel Gazdag, who despite having scored more than two dozen goals in the last two MLS seasons did not play much of a role in the European Championship. Marco Rossi hardly gave the 28-year-old playmaker any minutes, and he returned from the tournament with only a six-minute appearance in Hungary's 2-0 defeat to Germany. 

Gazdag remained on the bench in his country's 3-1 loss to Switzerland and also in Hungary's 1-0 win over Scotland. The latter match took place on 23rd June and by 30th June Gazdag was playing again for Philadelphia Union in a 4-2 defeat of Montreal.

In the last few hours, the Nyíregyháza-born Gazdag was back in the starting line-up and shone with an assist and a penalty goal in another match in which his club also failed to win. Chicago Fire defeated Philadelphia Union 4-3, but Gazdag was delighted to become the club's all-time leading scorer in MLS regular league play with 51 goals.

The Hungarian was level with former French player Sebastien Le Toux on 50 goals and now leads alone in a table that is followed by CJ Sapong with 36 goals. In addition, Gazdag adds to his tally four more goals in the MLS Cup - the title phase of the North American competition - where neither Le Toux nor Sapong managed to score.
