Clubs can still sign free agents even though the summer transfer window has ended in the big leagues. That's why a shock move is set to take place in Serie A on Wednesday.
Mats Hummels will end up reinforcing Roma's defence after being linked throughout the summer as a potential signing for several Spanish clubs. The player is expected to arrive in the Italian capital on Wednesday to undergo a medical and sign his new contract with Roma.
With this agreement, De Rossi's side confirm that they are moving very well in the free agent market. Roma have already signed Mario Hermoso and now they have reached an agreement with Mats Hummels, so they could have a new defence in a matter of days.
According to reports in Italy, Hummels accepted the proposal of one year with an option for a second for around 2.5 million euros per season. It all hinged on the departure of another veteran, Chris Smalling, who finally resolved financial differences to join Saudi side Al-Fayha.
