It was not a good start to the game for Roma in Florence. After just 11 minutes, Jose Mourinho's side were already 2-0 down, although the coach has reason to be more than just angry with his team.
Fiorentina took the lead in the fifth minute thanks to a controversial penalty. In the 3rd minute, Kardsdorp, on the edge of the box, tried to steal the ball from Nicolas Gonzalez, who went to ground as soon as he felt the slightest contact.
There appeared to be no more than that, a slight contact of the toe of the Roma defender's right boot against Nico's shin. The Argentinian, who was already losing his balance before the touch, went forward and fell a few yards later.
The referee initially signalled nothing, but did not allow play to resume either. He then received instructions from the VAR and the monitor came on and, a few seconds after watching the replay, pointed to the penalty.
Nico Gonzalez himself made it 1-0 with an extremely accurate spot-kick. And in the 11th minute, Bonaventura, with another close-range effort, increased the lead to bring the Viola side closer to Europe.
