Back in August 2003, Middlesbrough pulled off the latest major coup in their long history as they lured metronomic midfielder Gaizka Mendieta to the Riverside on loan from Lazio, with the Spaniard going on to make his debut for his new club on August 26 in a 0-0 draw with Leicester City.
