The Spanish-Moroccan footballer Munir el Haddadi will not be able to play for Morocco, FIFA announced just a few hours before Munir, currently in the Morocco camp, was going to play his first friendly for them.
The Moroccan FA (FRMF) issud a statement this Friday saying that FIFA "have rejected the request" from the FRMF based on the new eligibility rules for players with dual nationality.
The Federation also announced that they are going to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
FIFA sources told 'EFE' that the reason is that Munir played three games for Spain's U21 when he had already turned 21. Munir was born in Madrid to Moroccan parents.
In other words, it has nothing to do with the match which saw Munir play for 10 minutes under Vicente del Bosque back in 2014.
The footballer now plays for Sevilla and has spent the whole of this week in a hotel with the Moroccan national team together with his Sevilla teammates Yassine Bounou and Youssef En-Nesyri, That is ahead of the friendly this afternoon with Senegal.
Munir was filmed not only training with the other Moroccan players, but also acting and singing a song to the other players, a tradition for newly capped Morocco players.
Despite having been asked by EFE on several occasion, Munir has not referred to the controversy all week.
