CAF gives Nigeria three points from unplayed qualifier in Libya

Nigeria's players refused to compete and complained of "inhumane treatment" after being held at a Libyan airport for more than 12 hours without food and drink, the Nigeria Football Federation said.

CAF opened an investigation into the incident and on Saturday announced a $50,000 fine to be paid within 60 days for the Libyan Football League in addition to awarding Nigeria victory in the unplayed qualifier.

"The Libyan government cancelled our approved landing in Benghazi for no reason. They closed the airport gates and left us without telephone connection, food and drink," captain William Troost Ekong complained about an incident that generated uproar in African sporting circles.

Their plane was diverted to the city of Al-Abraq, some 230 kilometres from Benghazi, and the Super Eagles decided to return without playing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

"While we regret any inconvenience caused, it is essential to recognise that such problems may arise due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks and logistical challenges, which are not uncommon in international travel," the Libyan league justified.
