Barcelona's new captains for 2023/2024 season

Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong are Barcelona's new captains. The club made their new captains official on Friday night, when fans were able to see who would replace Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who left Barcelona for Inter Miami. Sergi Roberto 'moves up' in the pecking order and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen may be the one who will lead his team, as he is the undisputed starter.

It was striking that Robert Lewandowski was not selected. He was one of Xavi Hernandez' favourites, who has ended up opting for Frenkie, a player who has taken a step forward in recent seasons after dropping his level due to the bad dynamic that has characterised the last few years at the Camp Nou. 

The fact that the Dutchman overtook the Pole is not necessarily the result of a coach's decision. It is quite likely that the dressing room had a say in the decision and voted on it. It would make sense, as the former Ajax man has been in La Liga for several seasons now, while the former Bayern Munich striker is in his second year as a 'Cule' and is less familiar with his teammates.

In any case, with the experience shown by Lewandowski's long career, he has probably congratulated his team-mate and together they have sent a message of unity to the dressing room, which has some interesting matches during their pre-season tour in the United States. One of the most important matches will be 'El Clasico' against Real Madrid, where the fans will be particularly pleased to see their new captains.
