Navarre defender Cesar Azpilicueta will remain at Atletico Madrid for another season, with the club announcing on Sunday that he will be re-signed until 30 June 2025.
Azpilicueta, 34, joined Atletico Madrid in July 2023 after a long spell at Chelsea, where he spent 11 seasons and even wore the captain's armband.
During his first season at Atletico, Azpilicueta played 34 official matches (25 La Liga, six Champions League, two Cup and one Spanish Super Cup), totalling 1,826 minutes of competition.
Atletico Madrid highlighted the Navarrese player's "experience and hierarchy", which "immediately made him a fundamental pillar within the red and white dressing room, as well as one of the most loved and admired players by our fans, who will continue to enjoy his football for another season".
This is the full statement:
César Azpilicueta has agreed to a one-season extension of his contract with our club. The 34-year-old footballer from Navarra will therefore keep on wearing our colours next campaign after the 34 games played last season in which he performed in both the centre-back and at right-back, thus making a full display of his all-round versatility.
With an impressive career, Azpilicueta moved to our club last summer after eleven seasons at Chelsea, serving as captain of the team. His experience and hierarchy soon made him a fundamental cornerstone in the dressing room, as well as one of the most popular and admired players by our faithful that will keep on enjoying his football for one more season.
Congratulations, Cesar!
