The Argentina coach has a big call to make, after Manuel Lanzini suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The attacking midfielder picked up the injury in training, and a replacement will now have to be found quickly.
The new squad member, who is likely to be selected in the next few hours, doesn't necessarily have to be one of the 35 players on the pre-selection. In the case of injury, international sides have the opportunity to call on any player from the country.
This opens up a wide range of possibilities for Argentina. The first players that will come to mind for Sampaoli will be those selected among the 35. Those who were cut out of the 23-man squad are the following: Enzo Pérez, Pablo Pérez, Leandro Paredes, Guido Pizarro, Rodrigo Battaglia and Diego Perotti.
Zooming out, there are also a range of players who weren't included in this list, such as Ramiro Funes Mori, Germán Pezzella, Mauro Icardi and Lautaro Martínez. Sampaoli has plenty to choose from, but he will have to make a quick decision in order to integrate the new boy into the squad.
